PROBLEM
POSSIBLE CAUSE
CORRECTION
1. Engine will not crank.
Hydrostatic Control Lever not in
“PARK/START” position.
Move lever to “PARK/START" i
position.
Implement Power Control Switch
Out (ON) (2 on some models)
Push Implement Power Control
Switch In (OFF).
Battery connections dirty.
Clean battery connections.
Dead battery.
Re-charge or replace battery.
Defective safety switch circuit.
Replace switch.
Maladjusted safety switch.
Adjust switch.
Loose electrical connections.
Tighten all connections firmly.
2. Engine difficult to start.
Out of fuel.
Refuel.
Dirt or water in fuel system.
See your Ariens Dealer.
Dirty air intake screen.
Refer to “ADJUSTMENTS-
MAINTENANCE" section of this
manual.
Carburetor out of adjustment.
Adjust carburetor according to
Engine Instructions'
Worn, pitted ignition breaker points.
See your Ariens Dealer.
Maladjusted breaker points.
Refer to Engine instructions for
correct point gap.
Faulty condensor.
Replace condensor.
Faulty spark plug.
Re-gap or replace spark plug.
3. Engine will not idle.
Carburetor out of adjustment.
Adjust carburetor according to
Engine Instructions.
Dirt or water in fuel system.
See your Ariens Dealer. ,
Spark plug gap set too close.
Follow Engine Instructions to
re-gap.
4. Engine mISses or runs erratically.
Faulty spark plug.
Re-gap or replace spark plug.
Worn, pitted ignition breaker points.
See your Ariens Dealer.
Maladjusted breaker points.
Adjust points according to
Engine Instructions.
Faulty condensor.
See your Ariens Dealer.
Carburetor out of adjustment.
Adjust carburetor according to
Engine Instructions.
Dirt or water in fuel system.

Choke engine until warmed up.
