When installing the battery, make certain that the ground cable

is connected to the negative {-) terminal on the battery, see
Figure 15. Be sure the battery cable is connected to the positive

WARNING: STORAGE BATTERIES GIVE OFF HIGHLY INFLAM

MABLE HYDROGEN GAS. DO NOT ALLOW SPARKS OR FLAME
NEAR BATTERY. DO NOT LAY TOOLS ACROSS BATTERY TER
MINALS WHICH MAY CAUSE A SPARK RESULTING IN AN EX
PLOSION.

CAUTION: ELECTROLYTE CONTAINS SULPHURIC ACID WHICH

IS HARMFUL TO SKIN, EYES AND CLOTHING. HANDLE WITH
EXTREME

CARE.

CABLES FROM A BATTERY CHARGER OR BOOSTER BATTERY
CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE PRODUCT. SPARKS AND POTEN
TIAL HAZARDS TO OPERATOR COULD RESULT. MAKE CERTAIN
THE GROUND CABLE IS CONNECTED TO THE FRAME AND

POSITIVE CABLE TO THE (-F) TERMINAL.

NOTE: CHARGING BATTERY AT A HIGHER RATE WILL DAMAGE

BATTERY. REMOVE BATTERY FROM UNIT AND REMOVE VENTS
OF 3.9 AMPS FOR 10 HOURS WHEN CHARGING.

MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES OF ARIENS BATTERIES.

If you wish to have the best performance possible, it is extremely
important to do periodic checks.

1.

Do an occasional visual inspection. See to it that the bat

tery remains clean, both the case and the terminals. This
visual inspection should be done once a month.

2.

Check the level of the electrolyte.lt may be necessary to

add distilled water. This should be checked before each

usage.

3.

Another important check is the specific gravity. The

specific gravity should be checked with the Hydrometer.
Charge battery, if required, at rate of 3.9 amps for 10
hours. NOTE: CHARGING BATTERY AT A HIGHER RATE
WILL DAMAGE BATTERY. REMOVE BATTERY FROM UNIT
AND REMOVE VENTS WHEN CHARGING.

4.

Clean battery case and terminals.

ENGINE COOLING - FIGURE 16

The engine is air cooled. Air must circulate freely around the
engine from the air intake screen shown in Figure 16 and over
the cooling fins in the cylinder head and block to prevent
overheating.

Every 50 hours of operation (or quarterly) check the air intake
screen. In very dirty conditions this may be required more often.

Wipe away dirt or debris. On single cylinder engines, remove the

shroud. Figure 16, and clean and inspect the cooling fins. On
twin cylinder engines, remove the spark plugs; remove the bolts
at the top of the cylinder covers; spring the covers back slightly

to clean and inspect. Remove any dirt from the cooling fins.

Dirt and grime accumulations on transmission cooling fins can
cause overheating. Check and clean the cooling fins every 50
hours of operation or quarterly.
